GO-wamer forum looks at fisheries and environment policies

GO-wamer forum that looks at the fisheries and environment policies was recently held at a local hotel in Senegambia.

The sub-regional conference that brought together six countries in the GO-wamer eco-region, was designed to adopt the best practice for the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources as well as the validation of environment and fisheries policies.

The Go-wamer project funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, covers six countries namely, The Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and Guinea Conakry.

Declaring the validation workshop open, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Lamin Jawara, said they have to recognise their key development partners that support them to implement their development agenda.

The validation forum, he declared, was meant to look at the fisheries and environment policies to ensure that they harmonise policies that would manage their coastal and marine resources effectively.

“Coastal and marine resource have been a concern in the sub region and no country can do it alone; we have to work together within region to address this problem. The problem of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing is a problem that cannot be tackled by one country,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the UNDP Resident Representative in The Gambia, Ade Mamonyane Lekoetje, said the workshop on the coordination of the fisheries and environment policies in the Go-wamer eco- region was an important pillar of Go-wamer.

According to her, the overall goal of the Go-wamer programme, which covers six countries was to contribute to the reduction of poverty and enhanced food security.

She added that the specific objective of the project was to improve governance and promote adaptation of food practices for the sustainable use of marine resources in the Eco -Region.

She reaffirmed the recommendations of UNDP to support proposal recommendations and the comments to be in line with 2013 agenda and the SDGs since they are the experts in this area.

She stated that marine resources are an important sector in their countries, hence this valuable resource should be used effectively and beneficially.
